Reading Ultrasound Outputs
Ultrasound is most commonly used to image soft tissue — muscles, organs, and blood vessels — along with the surface of bones, fluid collections, and foreign objects. Bone itself is too dense for sound waves to pass through, which is why ultrasound can only show a bone's surface rather than its interior.
What ultrasound commonly reveals

| Abdominal organs | Assesses the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, and kidneys; frequently picks up gallstones, kidney stones, and enlarged organs |
| Blood vessels (Doppler ultrasound) | Detects blood clots, blocked vessels, and narrowing in arteries and veins |
| Neck & glands | Images the thyroid and parathyroid glands to check for nodules, cysts, or inflammation |
| Musculoskeletal system | Visualizes muscle tears, ligament or tendon sprains, and joint inflammation |
Where ultrasound falls short
Ultrasound isn't effective for examining air-filled spaces, such as the bowel, or structures hidden behind dense bone, since neither air nor bone allows sound waves to pass through cleanly. In those cases, CT or MRI is typically a better choice.
